Season 2 of Boardwalk Empire premiered on Sunday night. No spoilers here, but the before episode special mentioned Nucky having to find his way through a sea of trouble, Margaret may or may not be getting more involved, and Jimmy continuing to be conflicted and making poor decisions. I would like to see some more emergence of the historical Al Capone and for Nelson Van Alden to just stop existing. Leave a comment with what you’d like to see!
A new study by the Pew Internet and American Life Project has concluded one third of Americans would rather text than actually talk on the phone. The study found 4% of cell phone users do not receive phone calls at all during the day but 27% still do not use text messaging. Would you rather text than talk? My previous years of customer service have jaded me on talking on the phone, but I’m not sure I could deal with the horror of text complaints.
Minnesota and Iowa are seeing their pigs disappearing from farms due to thieves making off with 150 hogs in Lafayette, MN and 560 more in Kandiyohi county, MN. Since these pigs weigh between 250 and 300 pounds, these thieves must be working out. The likelihood of getting the pigs returned to the farms is considerably low according to police forces who think the pignappers are taking the pigs directly to slaughterhouses for profit. This little piggy went to market…..
R.E.M. has decided to call it quits after 30 years. The band most known for it’s 1990’s hits like “Losing My Religion,” “Shiny Happy People,” and “It’s the End of the World,” has split amicably. After their 2004 flop “Around the Sun” the band felt they had to prove they could still make a great record before calling it quits. They followed up with “Accelerate” in 2008 and this year’s “Collapse into Now,” then shook hands and went on their shiny, happy way.
Saudi women will now be allowed to “nominate candidates,” or vote in Saudi municipal elections. This is a huge step in equality for middle eastern women. Saudi King Abdullah also announced that women will be able to serve as full members of the Shura Council. There are likely to be delays in women being able to carry out the act of voting due to a shortage in segregated voting facilities. This is still a big step in the right direction for women’s rights in Muslim nations.
The Occupy Wall Street movement seems to be gaining attention with up to 80 people arrested over the weekend for charges of disorderly conduct, resisting arrest, and last week for wearing a mask. Apparently, according to an 1845 law, it is illegal to wear a mask at a gathering of more than two people. The movement is a peaceful protest against the banking industry and the government failing to hold the corporate machine liable for the destruction of our nation’s economy. Viva la Revolucion.
